When you call a tow truck, there are basically two types of units that can be dispatched to your location. A flatbed truck with a winch or a hydraulic arm rig. Both serve their purposes, have their own towing systems and are used for different situations.
We’ll take a look at these two most common tow truck methods below.
For vehicles that need to be removed from the road completely a flat bed outfitted with a winch truck is used. The truck will back up to the vehicle in question, lower it’s bed at an angle and hook a chain up to the car so that it can then pull the it up onto the flatbed. This type of tow truck is especially useful for recovery jobs and if the car itself cannot be towed from it’s back two wheels.
Vehicles that can be towed by their back two wheels are normally hauled by this type of tow truck. It is the quickest and easiest way to get the car moving with the least amount of effort. A hydraulic arm is placed under the front two wheels and lifts the vehicle. The wheels are then fastened to the arm and the car then then be towed while still having support from the rear wheel. In some cases, the operator doesn’t even need to exit their rig and everything can be completed via controls inside the cab.
Towing companies and tow truck operators are called to a scene for a multitude of reasons. From illegally parked cars, breakdowns and recoveries. No matter the reason for your tow service, the company you choose should be reliable, reputable and consistent.
